The image is made up of observations from Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) in the ultraviolet and optical parts of the spectrum. It is based on data obtained through three filters. The CTB 1 supernova remnant resembles a ghostly bubble in this image, which combines new 1.5 GHz observations from the Very Large Array (orange, near center) with older observations from the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory’s Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (1.42 GHz, magenta and yellow; 408 GHz, green) along with infrared data (blue). From a great distance, our Milky Way Galaxy would look like a thin disk of stars that orbits once every few hundred million years around its central region, where hundreds of billions of stars provide the gravitational ‘glue’ to hold it all together. But this pull of gravity is much weaker in the Galaxy’s far outer disk.
